We perform numerous engine repowers and overhauls per month with a large backlog of trucks waiting to get bay time in our shop. This customer called on two previous occasions and spoke with customer service. Both phone conversations were brief (we receive many calls per day from customers pricing and contemplating all sorts of options). We made an appointment for later in the month. The 35yr old IH truck had been sitting and we told the customer if it were sitting here, and we have a cancelation or are working ahead of schedule, we might be able to get to it sooner? The customer did not say he would bring it early. Later on the truck was towed unbeknownst to DP&M, over a weekend and left in our lot. The customer called days later to inquire about the truck and that is when we figured out who’s truck had been towed and dropped in our lot (among other trucks). We were able to get to the truck ahead of the original appointment. We were told it needed an overhaul. The vehicle was towed from our lot and into our shop on Thursday and the standard tear down procedure, for an in-frame overhaul, was performed. This process calls for the main bearings to be removed lastly as they support the crankshaft. It was during the removal of the main bearings on Friday afternoon late, that the #3 & #4 main bearings were found to be failed and spun in the block requiring engine removal. (This is most likely why the customer had it towed to our shop in the first place.) A change to the needed repair order was made, and a revised estimate of repairs was established Saturday morning. While our office is closed on Saturday morning, as a courtesy, the customer was notified and given the update of his engine condition and an estimated quote for repair. This was done to allow for contemplation time on the customer’s part and the ability to have a decision going forward for Monday morning. The customer immediately stated he did not wish to repair at this time (Saturday morning), and was then advised and agreed that he would tow the truck away from DP&M and pay a flat rate fee, that is an established company policy, visibly posted in our store front. We then reassembled the removed cylinder heads and oil pan back onto the engine to help protect from rust and placed the remainder of the parts in the cab for transport. We towed the truck back out of the shop into a holding area. This customer called back Monday and questioned why the truck was not going to be in running condition when picked up? It was explained that the quote given to him Saturday would be what was needed to put the engine In running condition and he did not wish to repair due to cost prohibitions and the vehicle value. The service writer and original salesman both spoke with this customer over the phone, and the salesman spoke at the counter with him also when this customer came in to pay the invoice and have his vehicle towed back out. This was an old 35 year old 855 Big Cam ******* engine that was towed in because the customer knew there were potential major issues with it…and although we understand the decision not to repair, we had more time & labor involved getting the truck hooked and towed twice in and out of the shop along with all the disassembly and then putting the heads back on and parts in the cab so as not to leave critical parts exposed to the environment. Our invoice fee for our uncovering of the extent of the damage to this engine was righteous and common in the industry when owner/operators decide to not repair after an extended amount of labor has been applied. Note: Customer was told this fee would be waived if he went on with other repair options.
